Nitmiluk Tours and the AFLNT have become partners in a major sponsorship deal for the 2014 season for the Big Rivers Football league competition and the Big Rivers Hawks team based in Katherine.

The two part sponsorship sees Nitmiluk Tours take naming rights to the Nitmiluk Oval Katherine Showgrounds and the Nitmiluk Tours Premiership Cup; as well as becoming major sponsors of the Katherine based Big River Hawks team.

Chairperson of the Nitmiluk Board Jane Runyu made the announcement saying that the local AFL plays an important role in the lives of the local Jawoyn and other indigenous communities.

“Nitmiluk Tours is proud to support the growth of the AFL in the region. Local football provides a much needed source of physical activity and entertainment for the Jawoyn people and other Indigenous communities as well as allowing players to form genuine bonds that overcome not only the vast distances and issues of access in the region, but historical differences between communities and cultures”, said Ms Runyu.

“We see our commitment to the local AFL competition as an integral party of our role in working with and supporting the health and well-being of all communities in Katherine and surrounding regions”.

The Big River Hawks were formed in 2010 in order to allow the young men of the Katherine region and surrounding communities an opportunity to play in the Darwin based NTFL. The Hawks team draws on players from an area equivalent to that of the size of the state of Victoria from communities of the Northern desert region such as Lajamanu in the West, and to the East, communities on the Gulf of Carpentaria such as Numbulwar and Ngukurr.
