This is a great way to enjoy the tropical bush surroundings of Nitmiluk Gorge. The walk commences with a short boat ferry across the river where you will begin the 8km return walk. 

This is a great way to enjoy the tropical bush surroundings of Nitmiluk Gorge. The walk commences with a short boat ferry across the river where you will begin the 8km return walk. Boats are scheduled at set times for pick-up and drop-off. This ensures your safety and at no times is swimming permitted in the first gorge.

The Northern Rockhole is a seasonal waterfall located 4kms from the Nitmiluk Visitors Centre. When opened for swimming, day walkers are permitted to do this self-guided walk at their own leisure. Suitable for families and solo travellers alike this moderate grade walk leads you to a stunning freshwater rockhole and waterfall. 

Enjoy nature’s beauty with a picnic and soak up the tranquility. This really is off the beaten track.

Notes 
  • Swimming at this location is not appropriate year round. Please enquire with Reservations staff for further information before your hike. Day use along this track is to the Northern Rockhole only. For Jatbula Trail Permit holders, the Northern Rockhole will be the first stop on your Nitmiluk journey.
  • Please be advised that those continuing on the Jatbula Trail from the Northern Rockhole do require a permit from NT Parks & Wildlife.

Awesome scenery

We did the dawn cruise and it was amazing. The small walk between the 2 gorges offers some rock art and is a good break between the boat rides. Our guide was excellent and told us all about the cultural and geological aspects of the gorge.
